The 20th-century Apartment

The 20th-century Apartment

From 1921 until the last war when it was destroyed, this part of the building was the home of Giovanni and Nora Giusti del Giardino and their children Justo, Francesco, Alfonsa and Carlo Alberto. There, we will be able to admire the “Sala dell’Aurora” painted in 1766 by Francesco Lorenzi, a pupil of Tiepolo who took over the commission because his master was engaged elsewhere. The 20th-century Apartment showcases a way of living, and of furnishing and decorating that is of a certain time. Both the rooms for guests and the way they are hosted has become more intimate. The rather rigid sofa where visitors would have been seated is pushed up against a wall which bears framed photographs rather than the historical collection of family portraits. A scattering of small armchairs. A dining room that no longer had to seat 30 guests at dinner. In those years, even the famous garden did not escape changes in taste: large numbers of exotic plants were being introduced from numerous botanical expeditions. Many of them adapted to our climate, but many others didn’t. In the absence of acclimatization houses for plants arriving from very different climates, people housed the new arrivals in the warmth of their homes. It is in memory of those times that Flò has brought together the botanical collection displayed in the 20th-century Apartment.
